Bali, 25 April 2024 — The World Water Forum (WWF) is the largest international forum on water resources that involves various stakeholders from various sectors, including politics, government, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society, industry, and others.
Held every three years since 1997, Indonesia will host the 10th WWF in May 2024 in Bali, involving around 172 countries. The 10th WWF carries the theme "Water for Shared Prosperity" with six main sub-themes, including water security and well-being; water for people and nature; disaster risk reduction and management; governance, cooperation, and hydro-diplomacy; sustainable water financing; and knowledge and innovation.
As part of the preparation for the 10th WWF, The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI) has partnered with Korea-Indonesia MTCRC to collaborate on a study of the water quality of Lake Batur, Kintamani. Assistant Deputy for Watershed Management and Water Resources Conservation of Kemenko Marves, Dr. Saleh Nugrahadi, said that with the support of MTCRC, it is hoped to provide new and comprehensive knowledge and insights to be showcased in WWF. "This collaboration is expected to ensure the success and optimal quality of the survey, considering that MTCRC has advanced equipment and an expert team in the field," said Dr. Saleh.
For the study of the water quality of Lake Batur, MTCRC together with CMMAI conducted a field survey on April 22-25, 2024, supported by local stakeholders such as the Center for Ecoregion Development Control (P3E) Bali and Nusa Tenggara, Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Directorate of Water and Air Police (Ditpolairud) Bali Police, Department of Forestry and Environment (DKLH) Provincial Government of Bali, Regional Government of Bangli Regency, and Department of Environment of Bangli Regency.
The survey included data collection of water parameters such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a, turbidity, and total dissolved solids using CTD. Water and sediment samples were also collected and analyzed for nutrients, heavy metals, and microplastics as well as sediment carbon stocks at the MTCRC laboratory. For a more specific study around the floating net cage cultivation area, mapping in the southern part of the lake was conducted using a drone equipped with a LIDAR sensor. The survey data were then combined to create an integrated profile of the water conditions of Lake Batur that can be displayed at the 10th WWF exhibition in Bali and later utilized by the local government to manage the Lake Batur area.
The World Water Forum brings attention to globally experienced water issues that help to unite various stakeholders to exchange solutions, innovations, and support. "For sustainable development in this area, scientific data-based policies through specific field surveys are essential. Through strengthening cooperation in scientific surveys, we are honored to contribute to a forum that plays an important role in advancing water management practices for shared prosperity around the world." said Dr. PARK Hansan, director of MTCRC. With the conduct of the survey aligned with the theme "Water for Shared Prosperity," the 10th WWF is expected to achieve the common goal of water for shared prosperity through understanding and solving problems related to global water issues.
