Busan, 12 June 2024 โ The convening of the 7th Korea-Indonesia Joint Committee on Marine Science and Technology marked a successful step towards strengthening cooperation in the field.ย
This agenda represents the commitment of both countries to strengthen cooperation in the field of marine science and technology following the formation of the Implementing Arrangement (IA) between the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea and the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI) of Indonesia on May 9, 2018. The Joint Committee between Korea and Indonesia has been held 6 times since 2018, indicating the importance of cross-border cooperation in marine science and technology.
The meeting was attended by joint committee members from various Korean institutions, such as Kim Sungbum (MOF), Kang Misuk (MOF), Kwon Jaeil (KIOST), Kim Wonkook (Pusan National University), Hur Sungpyo (Jeju National University), and Park Hansan (MTCRC). The Indonesian delegation consisted of M. Firman Hidayat (CMMAI), Aniza Suspita (CMMAI), Lelly Hasni Pertamawati (BAPPENAS), Radian Nurcahyo (CMMAI) and representatives from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Ivonne M. Radjawane. The meeting was opened with remarks from M. Firman Hidayat Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime Resources at CMMAI and Kim Sungbum Deputy Minister for Marine Policy at MOF.
In his remarks, Deputy Firman stated that since the establishment of the Korea-Indonesia MTCRC in 2018, this research center has brought significant progress for marine technology cooperation in Indonesia. Deputy Firman added that through MTCRC, The Korean government has shown remarkable support to Indonesia by providing data to further formulate the Indonesian Maritime Policy. Appreciation for MTCRC's commitment and work was also expressed by Deputy Kim Sungbum, "This achievement encompasses various fields, including joint research on the marine environment, marine satellites, as well as capacity development projects and marine surveys in Indonesia.," said Deputy Kim. On this occasion, Deputy Kim respectfully requested continued support from CMMAI to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the maritime sector. Furthermore, the MOF of the Republic of Korea will show the same support to achieve this goal.
On this occasion, the Korean Director of MTCRC, Dr. Park Hansan reported MTCRC's activities to all joint committee members, began by presenting MTCRC's status, main activities, special activities, and budget status. Additionally, Dr. Park outlined MTCRC's activity plan, which can be categorized into four: cooperation platform, joint research, capacity building, and implementation of Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects. On this occasion, Dr. Park also mentioned that a new project is being implemented, namely ODA KIOTEC (Korea-Indonesia Integrated Ocean and Technology Training Center) as a tangible manifestation of capacity building in Marine Science and Technology, in cooperation with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
Both countries agreed to develop and expand the role of MTCRC as a focal point for cooperation. This step strengthens efforts towards stronger and more effective bilateral cooperation in advancing the maritime sectors of both countries.
