In addition, the program also supports the development of early careers in the marine sector through the MTCRC Early Career Ocean Professional Program (ECOP) 2024. Thus, this initiative not only expands insights but also opens new opportunities for young professionals in the maritime industry.
Participants in this visit include stakeholders from Indonesia, including representatives from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), BPSDMKP, master's students from various universities in Indonesia who received scholarships from the ODA KIOTEC project, and the best participants from the 2023 Korean Culture Class organized by MTCRC.
The visit involved several key maritime institutions and facilities in Korea designed to provide participants with insights into the latest developments in marine science and technology, research, and promote expertise exchange in the maritime field. Places visited included Busan Port, the National Maritime Museum, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS), and Pukyong National University (PKNU).
At Busan Port, participants observed its diverse facilities and operations, gaining an understanding of its strategic role as a major maritime logistics center. Subsequently, at KIOST, participants were welcomed by Vice President Mr. KANG Dong-jin and had the opportunity to visit marine science research complexes and oceanographic data centers, providing firsthand insights into cutting-edge marine research and technology. The visit to NIFS provided participants with the opportunity to learn about current fisheries research and sustainable practices being developed in Korea. Participants also engaged in discussions with academic experts at PKNU regarding the ECOP program, specifically K(orea)-ECOP. These discussions covered its history, recent developments, and future cooperation plans.
This program facilitated discussions on the potential for collaborative research projects to address global marine and environmental challenges. In addition to academic agendas, participants enjoyed cultural activities, including visits to historical sites. The Korea Visit Program not only enriched the knowledge of the participants but also strengthened bilateral relations between Korea and Indonesia, particularly in the maritime and fisheries sectors. With this program, it is hoped that the capacity of human resources in the marine sector will be enhanced, and more productive and sustainable cooperation will be established in the future, benefiting both countries in facing global challenges in the marine and environmental fields.
