Cirebon, 5 May 2025 — The Korea-Indonesia Marine Technology Cooperation Research Center (MTCRC) supported a field course for students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Padjadjaran (FPIK UNPAD) in the mangrove ecosystem area of Cirebon. This activity is one of the concrete implementations of the cooperation agreement signed by both parties on November 21, 2024.
As an intergovernmental joint research center between Korea and Indonesia, the MTCRC has one of its key activities to strengthen human resource capacity in the marine and fisheries sectors. Since forming a strategic partnership with MTCRC, UNPAD believes that the technical expertise and modern equipment provided by MTCRC play a key role in achieving its goal of enhancing the quality of learning and practical experiences for its students.
This collaboration was realized through a field course conducted by the Marine Science Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Unpad, in the mangrove area of Mundu, Cirebon, covering three main subjects: Marine Remote Sensing, Tropical Marine Ecology, and Marine Survey. UNPAD sought to enrich students’ practical skills and experience by utilizing MTCRC’s advanced survey technologies and equipment, including drones with LiDAR sensors, the USSIMO hyperspectral radiometer, the Vertex 5 Haglöf, and RTK GNSS. During the activity, participants were divided into several groups to explore various aspects of field surveys, including mangrove transect surveys, mapping using drones with LiDAR and multispectral sensors, measuring Ground Control Points (GCP) using RTK GNSS, measuring tree height, recording diameter at breast height (DBH), and building a spectral library of mangrove species, all guided by MTCRC researchers and UNPAD lecturers.
“FPIK UNPAD received a valuable opportunity from MTCRC to be given an explanation and presentation of its marine survey equipment. Hopefully our students can gain new knowledge, experience and information through this field study with MTCRC.” said Donny Juliandri Prihadi, a marine science lecturer at UNPAD.
“As a joint research center in marine technology, we hope to continue sharing knowledge on marine surveys. This activity is one of the tangible implementations of the collaboration between MTCRC and Universitas Padjadjaran,” added M. Faqih Hidayatullah, MTCRC researcher.
After the field activities, around 86 students, 12 practicum assistants, and 3 lecturers also had the opportunity to visit the MTCRC Cirebon Center office at ITB Watubelah, Cirebon. During this visit, MTCRC showcased various marine survey instruments and laboratory facilities, which were provided through grants from the Korean government, there was also a presentation session explaining the use and data processing of hyperspectral sensors. MTCRC Korean Director Dr. PARK Hansan, together with the Indonesian Director of MTCRC, Mrs. Ivonne Radjawane, were present to warmly welcome and greet the participating students and lecturers from UNPAD’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences.
