Busan, 24 May 2025 — The Korea-Indonesia MTCRC successfully held the Korea Visit Program from May 19 to 24, 2025. This program not only focused on promoting marine science and technology, but also aimed to foster international collaboration and knowledge exchange between Indonesia and Korea.Â
It was conducted as part of the implementation of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) project titled “The Establishment of the Integrated Ocean Fisheries Technology Training Center and The Enhancement of Capacity Building in Indonesia” (ODA KIOTEC), funded by the Korean government and officially launched on June 12, 2024, in Busan, South Korea. The program has been officially recognized as one of the “Endorsed Projects” of the UN Ocean Decade. This recognition underscores the program’s commitment to sustainable development, capacity building, and sustainable ocean management. Moreover, it serves as a concrete example of the strategic collaboration between Indonesia and Korea in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of the capacity-building efforts, MTCRC engaged participants from various sectors in the Korea Visit Program, ranging from policymakers to university students. Delegations from the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs (Kemenko Pangan) and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) – through BPPSDMKP – represented the policymaking stakeholders. Meanwhile, the younger generation was represented by master’s students who are recipients of the ODA KIOTEC scholarship from five leading Indonesian universities: ITB, IPB, UGM, UNDIP, and UNHAS.
Throughout the program, participants had the opportunity to visit several prominent maritime institutions and facilities in Busan, including the Pukyong National University (PKNU) Research Vessel, the Faculty of Fisheries Campus at PKNU, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) in Busan and Geoje (KIOST Namhae), the National Maritime Museum, and the Suncheon Bay Nature Reserve. The itinerary also included historical and educational sites such as the Busan Museum and the UN Peace Memorial Hall. As a cultural complement, participants visited iconic destinations in Seoul, including Namsan Tower, Namsangol Hanok Village, and Gyeongbokgung Palace to deepen their understanding of Korean culture.
The Korea Visit Program provided new perspectives on the development of marine and fisheries science and technology. “We truly appreciate this valuable opportunity and are optimistic that the transfer of technology and knowledge from South Korea can be adapted to strengthen marine research and innovation capacity in Indonesia,” said Mr. Andi Indra Jaya Asaad, Head of BRPBAP3 Maros, South Sulawesi, who also participated as part of ECOP 2025.
The program created space for dialogue on potential collaborative research projects to address global marine and environmental issues. It not only broadened the participants’ insights but also strengthened Indonesia–Korea maritime cooperation toward a more sustainable future. MTCRC remains committed to serving as a bridge for collaboration between Indonesia and Korea in advancing an innovative and sustainable marine sector.
